Agar.io Cell Mechanics & Team Tactics: Complete Split-Kill Geometry, Virus Feeding, and Mass Decay Guide

Master split-killing distance calculations, mass decay mitigation, defensive virus shooting, and cell recombination in the father of all IO games, Agar.io.

Agar.io pioneered the modern .io browser gaming genre. Developed by Matheus Valadares, the game models cell biology where players consume stationary food pellets and smaller competitor cells to dominate the petri dish.

Mastering Agar.io requires understanding the physics of mass decay, split-jumping geometry, and using spiked green virus cells as both shields and artillery.

1. Mass Decay & Movement Speed Scaling

In Agar.io, cell mass and movement velocity share an inverse relationship:

Small Cell (10–100 Mass): High Velocity (Fast evasion, low eating capacity)
Medium Cell (500–2,000): Balanced Velocity (Ideal split-hunting size)
Behemoth (5,000+ Mass): Sluggish Velocity (Subject to rapid mass decay)
  • Decay Rate: The larger your cell becomes, the faster it sheds mass every second. A 10,000-mass cell loses hundreds of mass points per minute simply existing. You must continuously hunt to offset exponential decay.
  • Recombination Timer: When you split your cell (Spacebar), each piece requires approximately 30 seconds + (0.02 * Mass) before they can merge back together.

2. Offensive Split-Killing & Distance Math

Pressing Spacebar splits your cell in half, propelling the forward half at high velocity in the direction of your cursor:

[Your Cell (1,000 Mass)] ──► Press Space
                                  │
                                  ▼
[Base Cell (500)] ──── Propelled Forward ────► [Launch Cell (500)]
                                                      │
                                                      ▼
                                            Consumes Target (<380 Mass)

Safe Split-Kill Rules

  • You can only consume an opponent cell if your launched half is at least 1.25x larger (25% greater mass) than their target cell.
  • If you split prematurely and your launched cell is smaller than the target, they will consume your launched piece instead.

3. Virus Tactics: Defense and Artillery

Spiked green virus entities populate the map:

  • The Natural Barrier: Cells with less than 130 mass can hide safely inside virus bushes without popping. This provides absolute immunity from giant behemoths.
  • Virus Popping: If a cell with over 130 mass touches a virus, it explodes into up to 16 miniature fragments, leaving it vulnerable to scavengers.
  • Virus Shooting (The W Key): Pressing W ejects a mass pellet (14 mass). Firing 7 consecutive pellets into a virus causes it to duplicate and launch a projectile virus directly in the direction you are aiming, detonating massive approaching opponents.
