A Dark Room Complete Walkthrough: Fire Management, Compass Exploration, and Starship Hull Optimization

Master wood gathering, cartography, dusty path exploration, sulfur mine combat, and starship asteroid evasion in the text RPG classic A Dark Room.

A Dark Room (developed by Michael Townsend of Doublespeak Games) is a legendary minimalist text-based roleplaying game. Beginning in pitch darkness with a single command—“light fire”—the game unfolds into an expansive post-apocalyptic survival odyssey involving village management, wilderness exploration, and spaceship construction.

1. Phase 1: Village Economy & The Fire

The initial phase requires tending the hearth to keep the shivering wanderer warm.

[Light Fire] ──► Builder Arrives ──► Build Cart & Traps
     │ │
     ▼ ▼
[Huts Built] ──► Villagers Settle ──► Assign Woodcutters & Hunters
  • The Silent Forest: Allocate your initial villagers primarily to Woodcutting and Hunting. Traps yield teeth, cloth, and scales, which are vital for crafting armor and compasses.
  • Do Not Let the Fire Die: If the fire burns out completely, productivity pauses and villagers can perish during cold snaps.

2. Phase 2: The Dusty Path & Wilderness Map Grid

Crafting a Compass unlocks the wilderness exploration grid. The world is represented by ASCII coordinates:

A ──► An Alien Ship / Landmark
C ──► Outpost Town
I ──► Iron Mine (Essential for bullets and blades)
S ──► Sulfur Mine (Essential for rifle gunpowder)
V ──► Destroyed Village

Survival on the March: Water and Cured Meat

  • Every step on the ASCII map consumes 1 Cured Meat and 1 Water.
  • Craft the Cask (holds water) and Wagon (holds cured meat) to maximum capacity before venturing toward distant mines.
  • If your supplies hit zero in the wilderness, your wanderer collapses and all carried items are permanently lost.

3. Phase 3: The Starship & Asteroid Evasion

After uncovering the ancient crashed starship, you must fuel and reinforce it:

  • Hull Plating vs. Engine Thrusters: Reinforce your hull with at least 8 to 12 Alloy Plating.
  • The Final Ascent: The game transitions to a vertical flight sequence. Use arrow keys to weave between incoming asteroids and alien defense lasers until you breach atmospheric orbit to complete the journey.
